This is an interdisciplinary course for undergraduate students. Students should have taken “Body and Self-consciousness I” beforehand. We will investigate several issues related to body and self-consciousness: how may virtual reality influence our sense of body ownership? What is the difference between the first-person perspective and the third-person perspective? What are the roles of “body agency” and “visual agency” in the process of inducing bodily illusions? Is the sense of “where I am” the same as the sense of “where my body is”? We will discuss research papers both in philosophy and in cognitive neuroscience, and will try to conduct experiments to study bodily illusions, such as the “rubber hand illusion” and the “body swap illusion”, as well as the “self-touching illusion” and the new versions of full-body illusions that we recently designed in the “NeuroPhilosophy Lab.” In this semester, we will focus on how virtual reality (VR) may enhance our understanding of bodily experiences. This interdisciplinary approach will help us to obtain a deeper understanding of the relations between bodily experience and self-consciousness.

First, we aim to understand some important philosophical issues regarding body and self-consciousness. Second, students learn how to read philosophical and scientific papers carefully and how to write clearly. Third, students learn how to design experiments to conduct interdisciplinary research. Finally, students try to develop their own views on some of the key issues.
